Common Installation Mistakes Made While Installing James Hardie Siding

Are you looking for a wonderful and efficient external look for your house that can help you stave off even the most frigid climates? James Hardie brand siding may be the perfect choice for you! This versatile, good-looking and long-lasting siding can last more than 30 years.

To make the most of your siding in Calgary, you should have it installed by a qualified professional. There are a number of common missteps that are made when non-professional siding contractors install James Hardie brand siding onto the exterior of a home. Here are some of the most common mistakes made when installing James Hardie siding:

  • Unseemly brush-ups: Always be careful when applying touch-up paint to James Hardie siding. When spots of paint are brushed on to damaged siding, blotches of lackluster paint appear. If a mistake is made during the installation process, you must repaint the entire area. One way you can spot an imperfect touch-up job is by observing your home from various corners and in different lighting. If there are any blemished splotches on your boards, your touch-up job wasn’t successful.
  • Insufficient number of fasteners: The panels manufactured by James Hardie weigh 2.3 pounds per square foot and are 5/16” thick. This design allows the panels to be malleable and easy to install. Not fastening the panels correctly, however, can cause the product to flex when wind pushes the panel. To correct this issue, make sure to have an invariable pattern of fastening to the studs with nails. There are a number of fastening patterns recommended by James Hardie.
  • Failure to properly store James Hardie products: Improperly storing siding is a common mistake made by even the most experienced home improvement experts. Leaving the siding in an unprotected area can cause a number of issues, however. Siding should be stored covered with a waterproof tarp, and on an elevated pallet that has been placed on a level surface. It’s a small, easy-to-remember detail that can make a world of difference in the overall outcome of your home improvement project.
  • Bottom board is too close to the ground: Always make sure there’s enough clearance from the bottom board to the ground. Placing it too close to the surface may cause the siding’s paint to erode. It can also cause the size of your siding to fluctuate during seasonal changes. When nailing in your bottom board, you should consider the snow levels that may affect your siding in Calgary. There should be a minimum of two inches separating your siding from the ground.
