As spring rapidly approaches, it’s time to consider what kind of home improvement projects you’ll take on this season. Winter, of course, is too cold and snowy or rainy for most improvements, whereas summer is too hot and autumn brings unpredictable rain and snow. Spring is the perfect season to get your home in the best shape possible, so that you can enjoy it for the rest of the year.
These maintenance tasks should include taking care of your home’s siding in Calgary—or having it installed if you don’t already. Here are our favorite tips and tricks for making sure your siding looks fresh, year after year:
- Clean it: If left alone over time, siding can get so dirty and grimy that you’ll have to scrub it down. All you have to do is give the siding a good rinse with a garden hose once or twice per year. We recommend not using high-pressure equipment, like power washers, as it can force the dirt and grime into the cracks or even behind the siding.
- Inspect it: After your siding is clean, inspect it to ensure that there are no visible cracks, chips, visible caulk or other issues that might indicate water infiltration. Homes in Calgary are especially prone to water infiltration during the colder months. If you spot any issues, call a siding repair contractor right away—you don’t want to risk the water seeping into your home and causing structural damage.
- Move objects and grills away: Now is a great time to take stock of the outside of your home, and move any objects that could harm the siding far away from it. This includes grills (vinyl melts at high heats, so never barbecue or grill close to the side of your hose) and other objects like sporting equipment, bikes and other crash hazards.
- Paint it… maybe: Finally, if your siding is nearing the end of its lifespan, but replacement isn’t in the cards this year, you might try to eke out a few more years of service by giving it a good coat of latex exterior paint. However, do not make the mistake of using a dark, heat-absorbing color… unless you want the siding to melt, warp or sag in strong sunlight. Stick to light neutrals if you go that route—or call Rhino Exteriors to discuss complete siding replacement.
With a little time spent each spring, you can more easily ensure that your vinyl siding looks great for years to come.
